CELEBRATIONS
SECOND GRADE LIVING MUSEUM
The Living Museum came to Canyon Creek Elementary! This exciting project is a second grade integrated Language Arts and Social Studies activity. The students chose a famous person from a wide variety of book selections. They researched, took notes, and created original essays about their individual. This morning they brought their person to life! Dressed as their character, they presented an inspiring speech about their person's life -- their struggles and all the obstacles they overcame to achieve their dream. The students did a great job and the presentations were very informative. Way to go, second grade!

GEOGRAPHY BEE
Our First Annual CCE Geography Bee was a success!  We had 16 fourth and fifth graders participate.  We are so proud of all of the contestants.  Congratulations to our 3rd place winner, Nikhil Reddy; 2nd place winner, Sohan Makwana; and our 1st place winner, Venthan Dinesh!

MY LUNCH ROCKS
Our PTA is launching a new program—My Lunch Rocks.  The purpose of the program is to encourage and reward students for making healthy food choices during lunch.  If your child comes home with a My Lunch Rocks sticker, this means a CCE staff member or parent volunteer spotted them making a healthy food choice at lunch that day.  These choices include foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy proteins, skim milk and water.  If you plan to visit the lunchroom and would like to hand out a few stickers, please contact Heather Forshay at heather.forshay@yahoo.com.  Thank you for your interest and participation in growing our students healthy, inside and out!

CELEBRATIONS
SCIENCE FAIR & SCIENCE NIGHT
Thank you, students and parents who were able to join us last night for CCE’s Science Night.  We had a great turn out!  We hope our parents were as impressed as we were by all the students’ hard work towards the class projects and the individual projects.  The Mad Science presentation was awesome.  The kids’ faces showed they enjoyed it, as well.

This year, 19 third, fourth and fifth grade students and 11 kindergarten, first and second grade students chose to submit an individual project in the Science Fair.  Nine students were selected to move on with their project to the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair in February.  Congratulations to these 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students!

FIFTH GRADE PRESENTATION
On Friday, January 16th our fifth grade students enjoyed a very informative presentation on the topic of renewable energy and the importance of saving resources.  This topic connected to their current unit of study in Science.  Karla Lovelady works for Res America’s and volunteered her time to be with our students.  She discussed various jobs in the industry and the role they play.  The students learned how wind farms are built and they learned that one turbine produces enough energy to power 650 homes!  The students were intrigued by the information learned and had great questions to ask.  Thank you, Karla for a great presentation!

ATTENDANCE
It is important to us that our students attend school every day possible.  We appreciate your partnership in ensuring students are here.  Our Average Daily Attendance Rate for the fourth six weeks of school is 96%.  Let’s continue to celebrate high attendance with our Comets!

CELEBRATIONS
COMET AMBASSADORS
We are excited to announce a new program that we will be offering at Canyon Creek. While we are calling it a new program, it is something that our campus has been doing informally on a smaller scale for several years. Now, we have officially started Comet Ambassadors.  The purpose of this program is to provide support to new CCE families who need assistance with translation and provide help as new families acclimate to a new campus.  The group will offer advice and will be available to answer questions new families may have.  With such a culturally diverse campus population, it is our goal to continue to provide a culturally sensitive environment for all of our CCE students and families.  Our Ambassadors will provide input and guidance to assist our efforts to ensure all parents feel welcome, involved and comfortable!
If you would like to serve on this committee, please contact our campus Family Support Specialist, Mary Anne Hettenhaus.  You can email her at maryanne_hettenhaus@roundrockisd.org

SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH
January is School Board Recognition Month, and Round Rock ISD will join other districts across the state to celebrate the countless contributions of these dedicated community leaders.  Board members will be presented with artwork and letters from each school at the January 15th regular board meeting.  Our campus assigned trustee is Charles Chadwell, President.  Our students and staff showed their appreciation in a variety of ways through letters, cards, small gifts and candy, of course!
