Principal Update

The Texas Education Agency released the 2015 accountability ratings for our district this month.  We are proud to share Canyon Creek Elementary earned all 5 eligible distinctions!  We are so proud of our students and appreciate the support our families give both at school and at home.

Our breakfast service is off to a great start.  Thursday morning we served 52 breakfast plates and this morning we served 86!  The cinnamon rolls were definitely a hit! I’m so glad many families have given the cafeteria breakfast a try.  Thank you for your patience with our long line.  Our system will continue to improve.  We wanted to let you know that next Wednesday, September 2nd ACE, our food services mascot, will join us during breakfast.  I hope you and your child will stop by the cafeteria to meet Ace and enjoy breakfast.

This morning our Kindergarten students paraded the hallways showing off their favorite storybook.  We are so proud of our youngest Comets.  They have had a fantastic first week of school and the “big kids” loved seeing them this morning.

The first week back to school after summer break can be a hard transition for some students.  This week we have not worried about tardies.  However, next week we will begin to count tardies.  The tardy bell rings at 7:45 a.m.  If a student arrives after 7:45 a.m. he/she will be given a tardy pass prior to entering their classroom.  Our school doors open at 7:20 a.m. and students are allowed to enter their classrooms at 7:30 a.m.  We encourage all students to be settled in their classrooms no later than 7:40 a.m.  This really helps start their day off right.  Students who are eating breakfast will not be counted tardy right now.  We are working on our morning breakfast procedures.

Any person wishing to volunteer in RRISD is required to complete a Volunteer Application each school year.  Please click here to complete the online Volunteer application. We know the school year gets busy, so we encourage you to take care of this as soon as possible.  Once you fill out the application it will be good for the entire school year.  The online application takes less than five minutes to complete and will be processed within 48 hours.  It is important to use your legal name and click “Submit” in order for the application to be processed.  You will need to bring your photo id to campus to be verified and scanned, in order to complete the process.

Communication with our parents is very important to us.  We want to ensure that our families stay informed of various campus events and showcase the great learning that takes place in our classrooms.  We will send “A Note from the Principal” each week via e-mail.  The note will include celebrations, campus news and important dates.  If other members of your family would like to receive these updates, please have them click on this link and sign up to receive e-News from Canyon Creek.
Also, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Twitter!  Do you want to review information provided in previous “Notes from the Principal”?  Follow the Principal’s Blog.

Is English your second language?  Do you want to strengthen your English in a fun and interesting way?  Join RRISD’s International Parents’ Book Club!  Participants meet weekly to read and discuss books in English.  This group is for intermediate and advanced English language learners from all cultures.  For more information see the flyer attached at the bottom and/or contact Mary Anne Hettenhaus @

The Girl Scouts are hosting a recruitment rally from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16th in the cafeteria at Canyon Creek.  All girls in kindergarten through 5th grade are invited, along with their parents. Find out what Girl Scouts is all about and join a troop!  School organizers, leaders and troops from Canyon Creek will provide activities, showcase what they like about scouting and share how volunteering is fun.  Troops are formed based on the availability of adult volunteer leadership.
