What does Canyon Creek do during weeks leading up to state testing? Engage all kids throughout the building in hands-on learning! We know that if we provide students learning experiences that capture their attention and make learning fun, the rest takes care of itself. I appreciate the extra mile our teachers go for our students. It takes additional time to plan these fun events, but they are so worth it. Thank you to our parents who are also an important part of many of these events. Canyon Creek is a great place to work, learn and grow!
CINCO DE MAYO
Kindergarten students celebrated Cinco de Mayo as a culminating activity to their Project Based Learning (PBL) project, which supported their study of plants. In addition to learning about plants, the students learned where food comes from. These amazing students grew their own peppers over the last several weeks. Today, these peppers were used to make salsa, which they got to eat! What a great way to learn where our food comes from!
First grade students celebrated the study of the ocean with their annual Ocean Day. They created a tranquil, shimmery ocean in a bottle and mingled with an octopus friend. They sampled delicious seafood, helped build a house for a special hermit crab and dove into a sweet blue ocean of jello.
FIELD DAY FUN
We made the most out of a soggy day and Indoor Field Day was a success! A big thanks to our parent volunteers and our very own Coach Tighe for a fun day for all.
In addition to making chili, fourth graders participated in a variety of activities during Texas Day. They made a map of Texas using a cookie and edible markers, learned how to line dance and made butter. The also created a hand stamped leather bracelet, painted bluebonnets and more. This event kicks off their upcoming famous Texan research project. We can’t wait to read about the many famous Texans they will study.
Science was in full swing in fifth grade this week as students rotated to different rooms to participate in various activities. Here are just a few of the activities from the week. Students created marble rollercoasters with enough slope for a marble to complete a loop and tracked data on various trials. Using M&Ms and colored construction paper, students conducted an experiment to simulate how camouflage contributes to survival. They created a water lens and learned that when water takes on a curved shape, it refracts the light just like a lens. The shape of the water drop is thicker in the middle than along the edges, forming a convex lens. It was a full week of hands-on science exploration!
Third graders created a model of the Earth, the Moon and the Sun. This model assisted students in understanding the concept of the revolution of the Earth around the Sun and the Moon around the Earth.

We love having visitors!
